10 YearsOf Freedom
Over the past decade, we've opened new studios, welcomed new faces, and shared countless hours of practice together. This is a look back at the moments that shaped our journey.
Where it all began
Freedom began with a simple idea: to create a space where yoga felt welcoming, approachable, and rooted in genuine human connection.
When we opened our first studio at Heng Da Building on Cecil Street, we weren't trying to build the biggest studio. We simply wanted to build a place where people could move, breathe, and grow together. Many of the values we still hold today were written into our very first manifesto, and they continue to shape the way we teach, grow, and build our community.
Growing, one studio at a time
What started with one studio soon became two as we opened our Holland Village home. From day one, it had a warmth all of its own, with the kind of kampung spirit that made everyone feel like they belonged.
That same year, we celebrated our first birthday in the biggest way we knew how: by closing Lorong Liput, rolling out yoga mats across the street, and hosting our very first Freedom Block Party. It was the start of a tradition that would become one of our favourite ways to celebrate with the community.
Slowing down, venturing further
As our community continued to grow, so did the spaces we created for it.
We opened our Amoy Street studio, our first dedicated yin space designed for slower, deeper practice. Later that year, we packed our bags for our very first overseas retreat in Phuket, taking the Freedom community beyond Singapore for the very first time.
Bigger than ever
2019 felt like everything was moving forward.
We opened our River Valley studio, giving our growing community another place to practise and another neighbourhood to call home. By July, our annual Block Party had grown into its biggest celebration yet, with more than 300 mats filling the streets of Holland Village.
Looking back, it marked the end of one chapter. None of us knew that just months later, the world would come to a standstill.
Growing through uncertainty
Almost overnight, familiar routines disappeared. Studios closed, classes moved online, and every new announcement seemed to bring another round of uncertainty. Like many small businesses, we spent much of the year adapting, adjusting, and finding new ways to keep our community connected.
Yet in the middle of it all, we also took one of our biggest leaps by launching Freedom's very first Yoga Teacher Training. It may not have seemed like the obvious time to begin something new, but it reflected something we've always believed: growth doesn't always wait for perfect conditions.
Still showing up
Studios opened, closed, and opened again, but through every change, our community kept finding ways to show up.
Whether online, in person, or somewhere in between, we were reminded that a yoga community isn't defined by four walls. It's the people who continue turning up for one another, wherever practice takes place.
Finding our footing again
The effects of the pandemic were still being felt, and rebuilding wasn't easy.
But every class attended, every familiar face that returned, and every new student who joined us reminded us why we kept going. We ended the year together with 108 Sun Salutations, sharing a room once again instead of computer screens. It felt like turning the page on one chapter and beginning another.
A new home for Freedom
In 2023, we opened the doors to our Martin Road flagship.
It was the biggest studio we'd ever built, designed to bring together everything Freedom had grown into over the years. More than our biggest studio yet, it became a home for familiar faces, fresh beginnings, and the next chapter of Freedom.
Passing it forward
One of our proudest milestones came in 2024 as we celebrated our 10th batch of Yoga Teacher Training graduates.
Many of the teachers leading classes today first stood on the other side of the room as students themselves, and watching them grow into confident instructors has been one of the most rewarding parts of our journey.
We also continued expanding what Freedom could be, introducing experiences like Soundscape, Mama & Me, Paw & Pose, and more, making Freedom a place where people of all ages and stages of life could find a practice that felt right for them.
Growing beyond our walls
As our community continued to grow, so did the people we built alongside.
Throughout the year, we partnered with local cafés, wellness brands, hotels, neighbourhood businesses, and like-minded communities to create experiences that extended beyond the studio walls. Supporting local has always felt like a natural extension of what Freedom stands for, and these collaborations became another way to bring people together through movement, connection, and shared experiences.
Still just getting started
Ten years. Multiple studios. Thousands of classes. Countless memories.
Looking back, it's never really been about the number of studios we've opened or the milestones we've reached. It's always been about creating spaces where people can move, breathe, and practice together.
